A symbiosis between heritage and contemporaneity, shaping Aveiro’s urban identity.
Given the significant historical and cultural weight of a building designed by architect Silva Rocha, the immediate choice was clear: to preserve and fully restore the most visible volume of the house — the one facing Av. Dr. Lourenço Peixinho — thus safeguarding both this remarkable example of early 20th-century architecture and the visual memory of the avenue.
The rear section of the house, facing Rua Cmdt. Rocha e Cunha, was demolished to make way for the new proposed volume. From the avenue, this new building appears in the background, allowing the original house to remain visually dominant, despite the evident difference in scale.
The two constructions are conceived as symbiotic elements: one carries the historical and cultural legacy, modest in scale yet rich in presence, while the other — larger and boldly contemporary — acts as a symbol of modernity. Together, they create a layered architectural narrative, bridging past and future, leaving behind new sediments of history to be told in the unfolding story of the avenue and the city.
